Caraga State University - Main Campus!

Updated: Dec 13, 2019

Caraga State University (CSU), formerly known as Northern Mindanao State Institute of Science and Technology (NORMISIST) is a government-controlled university with its main campus located at the heart of the region in Brgy. Ampayon, Butuan City, Agusan del Norte. It has two campuses, one main campus and one auxiliary campus located at Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte. It offers tertiary, Senior High School as well as a variety of undergraduate, graduate and technical-vocational programs.

How and when the university was contrived traces back to the year 1918, when the first Congresswoman in the Philippines, Honorable Elisa Rosales Ochoa filed an Omnibus bill. The university was initially known as the Agusan Agriculture High School (AAHS). On February 14, 1920, at the time of the American Era, Proclamation No. 4 was passed by Francis Burton Harrison, the American Governor-General to the Philippines which declared a reservation of a 232-hectare virgin forest land in Barrio Ampayon, Butuan City as to where the school will be built but was only established as a reserved area at the conclusion of World War II in 1946. Construction began in 1937.

On June 22, 1963, the Republic Act No. 3604 was incorporated in to the Agusan Agriculture High School, turning it to the Northern Mindanao Agricultural College (NORMINAC). This was the aegis for the World Bank Assistance through the Central Bank Development of Education Agricultural Loan Fund (CB-DEC-ALF) for the implementation of Educational Project Implementing Task Force (EDPITAF) in 1974-1975. It also played a significant role in the discovery of the zinc problem of the land in Agusan. This breakthrough answered the cause of the poor rice harvests in most of Agusan’s rice fields and nearby areas.

A bill was passed by the late Assemblyman Antonio R. Tupaz, namely House Bill No. 25 which became Batas Pambansa Blg. 241 when President Ferdinand E. Marcos signed it to law on November 11, 1982, turning NORMINAC to the Northern Mindanao State Institute of Science and Technology (NORMISIST), one of the reasons being the rapid growth and development of both the agricultural and industrial aspects of the CARAGA region and the trend of logging which facilitated the rapid economic expansion of Butuan. This has greatly helped the people to educationally prepare a capable workforce equipped with extensive technical knowledge for development in the agricultural and industrial sectors. It has also heightened the quality and provided opportunity for education in Science and Technology to the youth.

As the institution grew steadily in delivering education, it began to offer graduate studies namely MA in Education with majors in Education and supervision, General Education, Curriculum and Instructional Technology and Adult and External Education, as authorized by Ref. Res. No. 12, s. 1994 of the Board of Trustees. The establishment of an auxiliary campus in Cabadbaran City was also carried out as part of their commitment to serve a larger academic area of responsibility.

All of the academic institutions, AAHS, NORMINAC and NORMISIST were united into CSU through House Bill No. 5110 which was filed by Jose S. Aquino, co-authored by Congressman Edelmiro A. Amante. After three readings, it was signed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on December 16, 2009, through Republic Act 9854. Then on August 16, 2011, President Benigno Aquino III signed Proclamation No. 239, granting the full ownership of the 232 hectares of land in Barrio Ampayon, Butuan City. Today, CSU is one of the topnotchers in Mining Engineering, Geodetic Engineering and Forestry board exams in the country.

The Caraga State University is strategically located along the Phil-Japan Friendship Highway which traverses Butuan City, Surigao City, Bayugan City, Cabadbaran City and the provinces of Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur, northeast of Mindanao, south of the Philippines (indicated by the letter A in the map below). The Metropolitan Manila, the Philippines'  business, political and industrial capital (indicated by letter E in the map), is just one hour and twenty five-minute-ride via plane to the City of Butuan.

The Butuan City Campus is nestled in a 232-hectare area, thirty-two (32) hectares of which is allocated for academic buildings and support facilities including a Gymnasium, while the remaining two-hundred (200) hectares of land is for production, research and extension projects of the University.
